For extraordinary heroism and courage above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the Third Marine Raider Battalion during action against the enemy Japanese Forces in the Solomon Islands area on November 9, 1943. While his platoon was engaged in the defense of a vital road block near Empress Augusta Bay on Bougainville Island, Private First Class Gurke, in company with another Marine, was delivering a fierce stream of fire against the main vanguard of the Japanese. Concluding from the increasing ferocity of grenade barrages that the enemy was determined to annihilate their shallow, two–man foxhole, he resorted to a bold and desperate measure for holding out despite the torrential hail of shells. When a Japanese grenade dropped squarely into the foxhole, Private First Class Gurke, mindful that his companion manned an automatic weapon of superior fire power and therefore could provide more effective resistance, thrust him roughly aside and flushing his own body over the missile to smother the explosion. With unswerving devotion to duty and superb valor, Private First Class Gurke sacrificed himself in order that his comrade might live to carry on the fight. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

This morning i set out on a ten mile run i have been looking forward to all week. As i set my GPS watch and and took of, i was sure i was going to use all i have learned reading to make this an excellent run. Before i knew it; I was slogging along,in pain and wishing the run was over. What happened? I lost my focus, i was thinking about what i was going to get my wife for Christmas,i was thinking about work, i was thinking about my knee pain but i completely lost track of what i was actually doing at the moment. I recognized i was doing this and i got my stride back and ended up finishing the second half of my run with a renewed vigor. I finished my run 12 minutes faster then last weeks run. Refocusing on the moment rather then a million other things; changed the entire experience. I kept thinking about the quote below as i ran.

I read this book a couple months ago and it was a great read. Dean Karnazes tells an incredible tale of his exploits as a ultra-marathoner. His tale is one of the greatest i have read of a mans metamorphosis since Kafka. Speaking of Kafka, Karnazes does a lot of quoting of Dostoyevsky one of my other favorite authors, but that really has nothing to do with Kafka, yet it does, how profound.....
What i liked about this book :
Running is the most liberating sport there is as far as i am concerned. Running is 90% mental and Dean Karnazes really puts the mental aspect into perspective. He kind of paints a picture of how life imitates running, and vice versa.

This year, on the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks i will be running the 9-11 Heroes run. I have always "wanted" to do "something" for a cause. I have always wanted to get off of my ass and stand/stand up for something, a cause greater then myself. I joined the military when i was 17 and served my time honorably and when i got out i kind of had the attitude (welp, i did my part) but i have always had a nagging inside so this year i am making the change. This year i am going to start doing more. Its the least i can do.

Not my normal read but i have to admit this book was an excellent read. Written and intended for the young adult reader, this was a very quick read. My sister was going on and on and on about it and when i saw it was listed on the Kindel store for $4 something i just bought it. I read it in a couple of days and was no disappointed for one second.
The Hunger games take place in a post catastrophic America (Panem). The Strong Central GOVT invented The Hunger Games to keep its citizens under control. Since i was a boy and my older cousin Scott who i always idolized would imitate Quint from Jaws while eating a saltine cracker quoting verbatim:
I have always been fascinated with the USS Indianapolis and her crew. So i purchased this book to get down and dirty with what happened. Talk about a horrifying ordeal. The ship sank in minutes, not hours not a day and a half, minutes. The guys who survived the torpedo explosion found themselves in the pacific, some in their underwear from either being asleep during the attack or just plain had their pants blown off.

On the urging of my wife i read this book. I must say i was pretty angry with the author Amy Chua for about 80% of the read . The author demonstrates her own personal way of raising children (the Chinese way). Her philosophy is stark contrast to the way Western parents raise their children. I was very offended by her system of parenting until i read this : On applauding her dog on doing a very basic low end dog obedience command :
"That's the difference between a dog and a daughter,I thought to myself later. A dog can do something every dog can do - dog paddle for example-and we applaud with pride and joy.Imagine how much easier it would be if we could do the same with daughters!But we can't; that would be negligence"......
